The question of ‘environmental and social responsibility‘ is something that any business operating today needs to consider across a wide range of different scenarios. Not only are there governmental regulations to adhere to, there are also questions of public concern which can affect client and customer relations as well.

With larger companies, the ability to boast ‘green credentials’ has become an increasingly important part of the PR machine, but for SMEs there are other, more practical reasons for being eco-friendly.

Any way in which a small company can cut overheads and carry out some simple business restructuring is to be welcomed, as the balance of costs of operations against income is the basic equation which dictates whether a business is viable. When saving money it also helps the environment, so it really is a win/win situation.

So, how can a typical SME operating in today’s commercial environment actually use the power of ‘thinking green’ to make a difference to their balance sheet?



Investing in new equipment can be costly and should only be considered when current IT infrastructure becomes unfit for purpose. However, older equipment can also be more power-hungry and less eco-friendly in a wide range of ways.

When new or replacement equipment is purchased it can mean you need less of it, via convergent devices, and also that it will use energy in a more structured fashion.



Of course, one of the biggest areas that comes under scrutiny in terms of the use of finite natural resources and contributions to overall carbon footprints is use of vehicles. Older and less efficient road vehicles not only use more fuel, but also can have higher emission levels than newer models. Better planning of operations can limit unnecessary trips which can have a dramatic effect on transport spending costs.

More business than ever before are finding themselves dealing on an international level due to advances in communications technology and the ubiquitous nature of the internet. However, new methods such as video conferencing can also negate the need for expensive (and carbon-unfriendly) air travel journeys and this is a perfect example of where outlay can be reduced in an eco-conscious manner.
