Can You Learn to Love Drinking Water?

We’ve all heard the advice that we should drink at least eight glasses of water every day. But if you don’t love to drink water eight glasses sounds like a mountainous challenge. Doesn’t it?

It’s not easy to start off with but if you give it a try, you’ll find that eventually you could even start to crave water.

Cut the Sugary Beverages

Glass of water

Drink cool, clear, refreshing water for your health every day!

What do you drink when you’re thirsty now?  Carbonated beverages, juice, milk, tea, coffee, sports drinks, energy drinks?  For people who don’t like the plain taste of water, it can be an adjustment to go from a cup of flavour to a cup that tastes like, well, nothing. But don’t forget, that taste of nothing is doing a whole lot of great things for your body, such as:

  • Increasing energy and focus
  • Reducing hunger
  • Hydrating your skin
  • Increasing your metabolism
  • Optimizing your digestive functions
  • And much more

You already know that your body is comprised of a whole lot of water but getting adequate water, whether you exercise or not, can reduce headaches, improve focus, and cut calories

Most commercial beverages contain, on average, 100+ calories per cup. Water contains zero fat, zero carbs, zero calories.  So you could cut what equates to a meal or two worth of calories just by drinking water instead of colas or other beverages each day.

Those looking to drink more water could start off with a small goal of a glass or two a day for several days and then bump up the quantity slightly.

But, how do you get past the lack of taste?  For a start, it grows on you. It really does! Make sure you’re drinking good quality water. Plain tap water may have a funny taste but if you buy bottled water or invest in a water cooler, it’s easier to drink as the water will be tasteless.  Tastelessness might not sound all that appealing but in terms of water…no flavour is the ideal flavour.

Making it a Habit

Habits can be hard to beak but there are good habits as well as bad ones.

It only takes a few weeks of doing something regularly for it to become a new habit.  Start by drinking a glass of water with each meal. Add in a glass when you wake up and before you go to bed.  Without much effort, you’re drinking five glasses a day and once you hit that milestone consistently for a few days it won’t be hard to add in another few cups.

At first, you’ll be making extra trips to the loo because your body isn’t used to being so well-hydrated but before long, you’ll crave more drinking water than any other liquid.  With what you’re doing for your health you can be proud.  Before long, it’s highly likely that the high caloric beverages such as cola will taste so sweet and foreign to you that you probably won’t want them any longer.

just looking at that glass of water is refreshing. We have water cooler at work and the water is really lovely so quite easy to drink especially in summer.
I think if you keep water chilled in your fridge and maybe have a small tub of ready sliced lemons then you can enjoy water many times during the day. Gosh my mouth is watering already.. water ice and lemon absolutely lovely

    • Yes it makes real sense that we would be healthier without drinking all those sugar drinks or caffeine drinks like tea and coffee. When your really thirsty water always taste good even if tainted in the taps. I think I’ll make some effort to replace a few coffees with water.. keep some in the fridge so it’s chilled. Its a good start.

tell you what that glass of water looks very appealing.I can easily drink just water but im going to invest in a home filter, as i am getting a guilty conscience with bottled water now even though they go to be recycled.

    • I think if your water at home has a funny taste usually dependant on which part of the country we live in, then yes it’s a great idea to invest in a high quality water filter. Re bottled water.. even though the bottles can be recycled many people are filling their own bottles to take out with them or better still using containers that will last for many years.

    • Well Nathan, ( thnx for coming over to comment btw) I think the idea of loving or craving the water might be a bit much to swallow ( pardon the pun) but nevertheless I really do think that our tastes can change and believe completely that the taste of sugary drinks could eventually be like drinking yuk:-) whatever yuk tastes like I suppose??? Now before you say you have never tasted yuk I bet you have tasted it many times. Think about putting something in your mouth and not liking it.. what do you say? YUK!

So yes, if everything eventually tastes like YUK then you would LOVE plain old drinking water… chilled and with ice …. and why not with a twist of lemon or lime?

    • Oh I went over to see some of your favorites but they are not there any more Nathan ????

If there be any one who drinks water is I. I never even bother of coffee ,tea ,soya or even anything other like drinking the natural water. The only thing that frustrates in Africa is that access to clean water is a problem. The rain may take long to rain and the metal tank remain very rusty, When rain comes the iron sheets collected rain water is a mixture of dust and rain. God treat it for poor Africans as no one purifys it. This is not worst the worst is for them who depend on dams that later drains and the colour of waters turns from pure white to darkish brown.. Alot of Internationational community project support are urgently needed minute after the other to save un acknowledged souls through Education that is the foundation of Development, Education trust funds available is like Lighting a light to someone in darkness, Most talented and bright children come from very poor family . • We take our clean water for granted sadly. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for you to rely on local water sources which probably have many contaminants. Everyone has the right to clean water and thank goodness there are many initiatives and organizations striving to help with these things Michael.

we take our water for granted and I just find it very sad how much waste there is and how much polluted water we are putting back into our waterways. The water is polluted because we are willing to buy and eat crops spayed with chemicals…. all the chemicals are leaching back into our waterways… very very sad indeed.

  6. I started drinking 6 -8 glasses of water a day many years ago and it’s amazing how much better it feels to be hydrated. Green tea and fresh water are about all I drink now. No soda for me — sugar is too sweet and the diet stuff tastes truly dreadful!

    • I’ve made a good start this week to replace at least 4 cups of my coffee with water. It works.. it really does make a difference and I’m sure I feel more refreshed. I think I would like to invest in a water filter one day soon but at the moment we are quite lucky in our area as the water doesn’t taste of anyting nasty as some people mention for other areas.

I really liked your article! I know that I don’t drink enough of this life enhancing stuff myself but that is one think that I word on. I do love water crisp clear spring water is the best. What I do is add the juice of 1/2 of a lime (or you can use a lemon, to I am just particle to those green limes!) and a few drops of liquid stevia to my 32 ounces of cold water. That is a total treat and fills me up and I love it! I should do that routine at lest 3 times a day but I only usually do it once. Thank you for your reminder to me personally to up my water intake.Wow, I am thirsty already!
