You live a greener lifestyle and you only buy green products. Cool. But what about the packaging that your products arrive in?
Can the packaging of your greener products be recycled or are they biodegradable and be composted easily?
To be truthful, most people are sick and tired of packaging that cannot be recycled in one way or another. Supermarkets and fast food stores are key culprits with many of them still using Styrofoam or plastic trays that cannot even be put into the recycle bin. But if you buy from companies that use compostable packaging then you can simply put the packaging into your own compost heap or your councils garden refuse bins which they will collect and compost down for resale to the community.

It can be a great advertising point and let’s face it; it is just the right thing to do. Using green containers has many benefits to both the planet and the consumer. They are becoming more and more readily available in the marketplace. And customers are flocking to businesses that use these biodegradable food packaging products.

So how long can these green packages stay on the shelves?
Green containers have a shelf life that can be customized to the user’s needs. The shelf life can range from anywhere between a few months to a year. It all depends on what the customer needs. These containers perform exactly as their conventional plastic counterparts do. It is hard to tell them apart by look and performance right up to the point of degradation. As far as cost goes, degradable products are only a slight bit more expensive than conventional products and are well worth it. Degradable products are reusable and recyclable before the breaking down process begins. Degradable products are non-toxic and safe for food items and they have no harmful toxin residue after degradation occurs.
Is it really Biodegradable?
There are many products on the market that use the label “Biodegradable” as a description.
But, what does biodegradable actually mean?
The term is usually associated with environmentally friendly products. The biodegradable items should be able to be broken down by natural process into basic components, usually bacteria and fungi. The ideal final components after degradation occurs would be Carbon Dioxide and Water.
The label of biodegradable can be placed on just about anything. If you are a green consumer you need to read your labels and become educated about the products you use. Even though the product may say it’s biodegradable, it doesn’t mean it’s good for the environment. Certain chemicals used in several of today’s biodegradable products can be broken down, more slowly, but the end result is still toxic for the environment.
Green Biodegradable containers are also fully compostable
If you are using a commercial composting system, your container will compost in about 30-45 days. If you are composting at home, it may take a bit longer. One great plus of using degradable plastics is that the production of them is considered a sustainable activity. Production of these plastics relies less on fossil fuels. The use of degradable plastics can reduce carbon footprint by 42%!
So whether your company uses food containers, trays, boxes, or bowls the time to make the switch to biodegradable is right now! There is no better time than the present to start caring for the future of the planet and the current health of our environment.

I really do wish them evey success and I hope they grow to have more factories globally using the local farmers in each area.

it saddens me to see so many non recyclable plastic food trays in the shops. And all the vegetables and fruits that are in plastic bags when there really is no need for it. Where I live we are scourged by people dropping those styrofoam take away trays in green areas. I live near what is callled a common which is absolutely beautiful with a woodland walk and the kids go down there in gangs and leave all their rubbish from the local tak aways. At least they would rot down quickly.
so much for children being our future then eh Allana? it seems to me that schools and parents havent really been able to teach good values after all. I see it all the time where I live to. Just the other evneing a large group of teenagers was on our local playing field. Harmeless enough, they werent causing any trouble as such. Then off they waent and simply left a ton of take away food cartons, beer bottles and cans and plastic carrier bags. Just left there wihout a darn care in the world for anything. What gives?
Obama summed that all up nicely. Green jobs are jobs of the future. Not just because they pay well and cannot be outsourced and not just because they help strengthen our economy, but because they help to reduce our dependance on oil and will in fact play a major contribution to saving our planet.
