When you think of the biggest name brands in the world today, one of the first things that will spring to mind is the company logo.
Whether the design is simple or complicated, a serious amount of time has been spent in creating a logo that will capture the target markets imagination. Everything from soft drink companies to computer games and food manufacturers will have a catchy logo that will become every person’s first point of reference with the brand. It is usually the first step in creating brand loyalty with a customer, and logos are something that has been used for centuries.
During the industrial revolution, manufacturing companies wanted their products to be easily identified, and the invention of the printing press helped to bring the logo to prominence, starting the trend that is still so important to brands to this day. But even in the ancient civilisations of Greece and Egypt, the logo was in use, with the Ancient Egyptians branding their livestock to distinguish them from other farmers.

Isnt it funny how we as lay persons simply accept logos without the blink of an eye. Of course many of the top brands don’t even need to have any writing on them as the logo they use is unmistakeable and is so impacted into our minds that we don’t even realize we are being subliminally advertised too anymore.
I never ever gave it a second thought that logos as with anything else had to have some sort of good histroy from way back in time like this but it all makes perfect sense.
Your so right Stephen. We know that many of our top brands stand out immediately. Some of the bigger companies like NIKE, CocaCola, Pepsi to name just a few are instantly recognizable. But you know something else about logos…. with social networking we tend to connect with and often regularly chat with smaller businesses and if they have a good logo I can remember who they are immediately as soon as I see their logo. This can also work when the business owner has a personal photo. We tend to remember their faces and recognize them elsewhere on the web instantly. Nice to put a face and a name to a compamy I think… don’t you agree?
I never really thought about the history of logos. This is a good read. Psychologically logos do help with company recognition. Maybe because our minds always think with pictures/images, not words…
