In the light of recent climate change and environmental issues, it is now more important than ever for businesses to play their part in ‘green’ initiatives. Whilst recycling, walking to work and using less paper will all have a positive effect, is it enough?
The government have recently issued a new initiative to help businesses ‘go green’.
Larger firms will be subject to mandatory carbon reporting and measuring, a welcome suggestion for those who have long waited for businesses to take responsibility for their actions.
Epicor attempted to produce an infographic that shows the number of businesses who are actively monitoring their carbon emissions already.
Instead, what they found was that:
many companies had not even heard of the term carbon accounting, and out of those that had, less than a quarter of them could explain what it was.

This new government plan will hopefully give businesses the boost they need to effectively monitor their carbon emissions and give back to the environment that they need to maintain.

Carbon accounting isn’t easy either and be quite demanding, especially on larger organisations with a large estate. It is vital to committ sufficient time and resources to completing this task.
I find it quite shocking that businesses dont know about accounting for thier carbon footprint. maybe carbon accounting should be made compulsary? Either learn to do it yourself or pay someone to help but certainly have it so it has to be an annual return that is completed.
