7 Reasons To Get Underfloor Heating Before the Winter

Before you know it summer will be long gone and winter will be upon us. The lovely low temperatures winter brings are rarely missed, the only exception being if it brings snow. Wooly hats, gloves and huge warm jackets are a necessity along with central heating in your home.

However underfloor heating can be a great alternative to conventional radiator based central heating systems.

Here are the 7 reasons why you should get underfloor heating fitted before this coming winter arrives.

Reduced Heating Bills

During the winter months when the temperatures are horribly low, central heating tends to be switched on for a large amount of the time. Although this brings the great feeling of being nice and cosy inside, whilst it is cold outside,  your energy bill will increase drastically. This is because radiators are not as efficient and a lot of heat that they omit is wasted. On the other hand underfloor heating systems are much better. Depending on what source you look at, your energy bill could be reduced by anything up to 35%.

The heat of the radiators (convectional) tends to heat the top of the room before it reaches the bottom. Underfloor heating actually heats the area where people stand and sit making it more fuel efficient.

Underfloor heating is more green

Old fashioned radiators rely on the use of energy sources that are not renewable to provide them with hot water. This is particularly true of gas central heating systems which should never be a first choice for a green lifestyle. Underfloor heating systems however, can be easily connected to renewable energy sources. This will increase the ‘green status’ of your home and leave you feeling less guilty for having the heating turned on constantly during winter season.

Underfloor heating eliminates dust.

Unlike radiators, underfloor heating does not create a surface that is prone to the collection of dust, as it is under the floors. Radiators are well known for being great dust collectors as they are extremely difficult to clean in between the fans which are hidden behind the radiator, which can be a problem if there is someone with a dust allergy in the house.  By installing underfloor heating you will have less dusting to do which is always a good thing!

Underfloor heating frees up some space

This is a great reason for choosing to install underfloor heating. Think about the free reign you will have when choosing where to put pieces of furniture. Quite often there are two walls lost to radiators in larger rooms. But underfloor heating frees up all of this wall space so you can design your room exactly as you want it.  Doesn’t that make great sense?

Better by Design

Heat rises and because of the way radiators are designed, they heat the ceiling area first before they eventually fill the room and heat you.

This is a bigger problem in houses with high ceilings. As underfloor heating heats the floor up first, and the heat rises from there, you are warmed up a lot faster than if you used the conventional radiator. If it has been cold outside, when you come in you want to be warmed up as fast as possible and underfloor heating is the way to achieve this.

Underfloor heating is safer

The temperature of underfloor heating only rises to a set temperature and will never be so hot that it burns you. The same cannot be said for the radiator as it is essentially a huge hot surface that rises to scalding temperatures. Have you ever touched the pipe work or a radiator surface when it is on quite a high temperature which you need in freezing weather? If you have a young person in your house you can reduce the chances of them burning themselves by choosing underfloor heating.

Underfloor heating can increase the value of your home

The reason underfloor heating will do this is because it will make your house look more modern, and therefore more appealing. No radiators on walls ( as mentioned above) which may soon become a thing of the past and everyone will be looking for a home with underfloor heating. This works in the same way that people are less likely to buy a house if it has single glazed windows as opposed to double.  Installing underfloor heating will make your home much easier to sell if you ever decide to do so.

  1. I found this article whilst looking for other information on log cabins however this article gives good reasons as to why you should get underwater heating. You wouldnt beleive the amount of money you save on energy bills!

  2. Mercedes Potter says:

I never thought of this as a viable heating alternative, but your reasons make a lot of sense. A heated floor in the dead of winter is a treat all in itself! I’m going to do some further investigation into pricing, hopefully it’s not too expensive but the good things always are. Thanks for sharing!

  3. While may be pricey to add underfloor heating to your home, it is definitely a feature of your home you will fall in love with. The pleasure of knowing you don’t have to walk on a cold tile floor when showering or taking a bath, is worth the price alone. It will as you mentioned increase the value of your home as well, so it seems to be a no brainer if you can afford the initial cost.
