Many experts predict we have reached the days of peak oil. Between the rising costs of gasoline and the grave environmental dangers caused by the massive consumption of resources, more consumers are opting for vehicles that make less of an environmental impact.
Here are five of the most eco-friendly cars, all of which either feature very high gas mileage or run completely on electricity, bypassing the pump entirely.
2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
The Toyota Prius has always been a popular choice for eco-conscious drivers. Now, Toyota offers a plug-in option so that the vehicle can run completely on electric power, reaching an impressive 62 miles per hour on electricity alone. The battery recharges in just a short three hours, but, if you forget to charge the battery, the Prius shifts seamlessly to hybrid power that still offers you the same high MPG that you expect from a Prius.
Nissan LEAF
As eco-friendly consumers begin to demand more vehicles that use alternate sources of energy, Nissan has stepped up to the plate with the LEAF, a completely battery powered automobile. Not only does the LEAF use no gas, but it also emits no emissions into the air. The Nissan LEAF still offers all the amenities of a regular car, but also provides the comfort of knowing that driving this car decreases the size of your carbon footprint on the Earth.
2012 Chevy Volt
Chevy offers its own hybrid vehicle onto the market with the 2012 Volt. The Volt allows you to drive up to 35 miles on electric power alone. Like all hybrids, the engine switches to gas power when the electric charge runs out, but the Chevy Volt has a unique feature. The engine also contains a gas generator that recharges the electric battery, potentially giving you up to 375 miles on a single tank of gas!
Lexus F Sport Package CT
Lexus has a well-earned reputation for producing beautiful and high-performing cars that turn your expectation of what a vehicle can do on its head. The same fact holds true for Lexus’ hybrid, the F Sport Package CT. While hybrids have a reputation for being slower and harder to handle than gas-guzzling machines, Lexus has given its hybrid the sleek handling and power you would expect from a regular engine in a hybrid.
2012 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback
Many drivers choose to operate large SUVs out of a desire for more passenger and cargo space, but those larger vehicles can consume large amounts of gas, making them not very eco-friendly. For drivers that want cargo space without expanding their carbon footprint, the Chevy Sonic Hatchback is a vehicle that offers ample storage and passenger room while still getting up to 40 MPG.
If you are looking for a car that is eco-friendly without sacrificing power and style, the above options represent the best of the field in both hybrid and high MPG vehicles. Any of these choices offer many of the same features of regular vehicles without using as much gas.

I just wish I could afford a new car full stop but one of these hybrids would do very nicely thankyou. Its funny how people still think that an electric will chug along like a milk float or slowly run out of power too often. I still haven noticed an electric car charging point yet? maybe I need to open my eyes a bit more?
Can’t say I have spotted any electric car charging points myself either Jenson.
I must say, Chevy volt is superb. Running on two types of sources – gas and rechargeable batteries. Frankly true, I hardly see charging spots, there’s this spot at victor ashe park and that’s all I know.
These cars are awesome and cool. I think we need more cars like them because as you know, we are almost running out of fuel, particlulary oil, in the earth. With a go green tech we are absolutely saving our planet. Here’s to renewables for the future of driving.
