As we are well into the Autumn months, those of use with gardens (or access to local parks) are gifted with an enormous bounty of carbon-neutral eco fuel. The only question is how do you turn nature’s shedding bounty into something that you can burn in a stove, firebowl or chiminea.

The answer is to get your hands on a logmaker. These are available from eco-product specialists and also from a variety of online stores specialising in environmentally friendly products. Essentially what they do is compact the natural waste in your garden, be that leaves, clippings, grass etc and turn it into logs.

Logmakers typically come in two types: ones for dry waste and ones for garden (wet) waste.

However, they both use the same basic methods for creating logs. The dry logmakers can turn household waste, particularly card and paper (those junk marketing letters will have a use after all!) into logs. Simply wet the paper or card slightly and then push into the log maker. The wet logmakers are more useful for garden waste, but use essentially the same process – moisten the waste and compress in the log maker (which will squeeze the excess water out. All you have to do then is allow it to dry and ‘hey-presto’ you have some stove or chiminea fuel!

As you know reclaiming garden waste as fuel is essentially carbon neutral as the amount of carbon released when burning your newly created logs is the same as the amount of carbon absorbed by the plant matter while growing. So if you are getting your garden waste from a sustainable source you simply can’t get a more eco-friendly fuel.

Of course, it will save you some money too (and a few trips down to the local garden centre to stock up on logs) which can’t but help nowadays when many of us are all watching the pennies.
