Degrees that focus on environmentalism and sustainability are increasingly popular these days at both traditional and online colleges.

In a world where “going green” is a buzzword and the concept of climate change is a social, scientific, and political issue rolled into one, there is increasing interests in the study of sustainability.

This naturally means that an environmental background is appealing to employers in a wide range of industries and fields, among them consulting, engineering, design, and construction. Students who possess a degree in sustainability or a related topic are often able to enter the job market as stronger candidates.

On that note, let’s take a look at some of the top degree programs in sustainability offered at American online colleges.

If you’re interested in gaining added credibility or knowledge in the area of environmentalism, you may want to consider the following programs:

Bachelor’s Programs

-Columbia Southern University, BS in Environmental Management

One of the oldest and largest online universities, Columbia Southern is known for the breadth and quality of its degree offerings. The Environmental Management program, moreover, is one of the school’s most well-regarded. It leaves students knowledgeable in federal environmental standards, principles of resource use and protection, and sustainability technology. Graduates are well-prepared for work in an industrial, corporate, or regulatory environment.

-Everglades University Online, BS in Alternative and Renewable Energy Management

Florida-based Everglades University offers smaller class sizes and more focused concentrations than the average online college. Its program in Alternative and Renewable Energy Management is no exception. The program focuses strong on renewable energy sources such as solar, photovoltaic, nuclear, wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric. It prepares students for management, construction, and consulting careers in green energy enterprises of any kind.

Master’s Programs

-Walden University, Master of Business Administration in Sustainability Strategies

The degree itself takes a strong technological, future-driven, and corporate approach to environmental studies. Graduates leave with the ability to enact and management energy policies in any management position in the business world.

-Southern New Hampshire University, M.B.A. in Sustainability and Environmental Compliance

Southern New Hampshire University is a good choice for students who seek an affordable education and a real-world campus alongside its online one. The university also offers one of the best M.B.A. degrees in sustainability: its Sustainability and Environmental Compliance program. The program teaches students how to be both green and economical while running a business. To do this, it brings together a diverse collection of instructors – composed of executives and environmental advocates – to show students that going green and complying with regulations does not necessitate incurring greater business costs.

-Green Mountain College, Sustainable M.B.A. Program

Green Mountain College is one of the few online institutions with a strong environmental focus. Students in all degree tracts complete an Environmental Liberal Arts General Education Program, classes are taught by educators experienced in green energy and technology, and the school further provides all students access to an online library full of environmental resources. The Sustainable M.B.A. program follows in this tradition. It offers concentrations in government policy, green development, natural and organic resources, and renewable energy, thereby giving students a broad spectrum of sustainability options.

These are just a few of the most highly-regarded online sustainability programs out there.

We can only expect colleges to announce more sustainability options in the coming years. Whether you are looking to work in the public or private sector, for a large corporation or for a small startup, anyone contemplating a career in sustainability can certainly find a program that fits their needs.

The information on Walden University proved helpful for me, thanks. With people becoming more eco friendly these days, studies which impart on environmentalism and sustainability are becoming very popular. Preserving our environment and promoting the green concept is very important.

    • I think it would be great to do an online degree especially in sustainability and the environment as these are subject areas very high on the agenda now.

  2. It certainly makes sense that online colleges have started to focus some of their programs on green energy and sustainability. Too many graduating students are finding it hard to secure a job as a result of their education, which is mainly to do with the economy right now, but it really makes sense to study something, and gain a degree in an area that is going to give you a competitive advantage over a lot of other job applicants.

  3. It definitely makes sense that online colleges have started to focus their programs on green energy and sustainability. Too many graduating students are finding it hard to secure a job as a result of their current degree, which is mainly to do with the economy right now, but it really seems beneficial to study something and gain a degree in an area that is going to give you a competitive advantage over a lot of other job applicants.

  4. I think it is smart that online colleges are focusing on sustainability. I think we will see a trend in degree programs focusing on “going green.” It will allow for more competition within the industry. It will be interesting to see how the green movement will grow over the next 5-10 years.

    • I think the green college and degrees movement will all grow very fast now the momentum has begun and the penny might have finally dropped Michelle

  5. Maybe more americans should consider studying outside the US. There are quite a few interesting studies in Europe, and in some places you don’t even pay tuition fees. See e.g. this master degree program in Norway: http://www.uia.no/no/portaler/om_universitetet/oekonomi_og_samfunnsvitenskap/studier/undervisning_paa_engelsk/master_in_development_management

  6. I and our organization is very interested in green energy and sustainability but since we are located ion Africa, Cameroon to be precise we believe the online studies will help us a lot and easy our work on sensitizing students on the need to go green and keep the planet earth save. We have a project to open an online study center for low income urban and rural duelers and even our graduates so they can squire the skills if not more on how to go about keeping a save society for all. We will be very much grateful and appreciating if there is anyway you can be of help.

  7. Stevens Henager from Computer Science says:

hmm I didn’t know that sustainability programs were so intense that they made you that much better of a candidate for a job.
