Many countries in the world do not have the luxury of having clean water as we have here in the United States. Because of this, many individuals and companies have started clean water initiatives to get the kind of clean, safe water offered by  http://www.lifesourcewater.com/  to the almost 1 billion people in need around the world.

These five initiatives should be noted for their contributions to a global problem:

The Water Project

This group is a nonprofit organization that provides funding for water wells, small dams, tanks for rain water collection, and water filtration systems.

The Water Project gives the money they raise to NGOs and missionaries that are already in the field and know the particular needs of the communities. Those partners then provide the manpower to complete the projects, mobilize and train the communities that they are helping, and follow up with them to check on their progress.

bringing clean water to developing countries

These initiatives are making a difference as well as progress towards clean water being available to all world citizens

The goal is to provide a long-term sustainable solution to these communities in five countries:

  • Kenya
  • Rwanda
  • Sierra Leone
  • Sudan
  • and Uganda.

Drop in the Bucket

This is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit group that works to provide water and sanitation to villages in East Africa. They currently have field offices in Uganda and South Sudan. Founded in 2006, this group has built sanitation facilities and wells for hundreds of villages as well as introducing social programs and initiatives to the people of these villages. This organization goes to the villages and discusses the complex problems in group settings in order to find a solution. They then work with the people to fix these issues with long-term solutions.

Water for People

This is a group that works to provide developing countries with drinking water from a sustainable resource, educational programs on hygiene, and sanitation facilities. Their main goal is to look at entire areas and regions and provide these larger areas with solutions and programs that will last and are capable of being handled by the villages rather than the organizations. They are currently serving 11 countries:

  • Honduras
  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua
  • the Dominican Republic
  • Bolivia
  • Peru
  • Ecuador
  • Malawi
  • Rwanda
  • Uganda
  • and India.

Global H20

This organization is based in the United States, and has offices in Austria, Germany, and the U.K. Global H20 contracts work to organizations in developing countries in order to provide wells, rain harvesting facilities, and spring boxes to those areas most in need. Their goal is to do this with minimal expenses and with simple products. All of their projects have been in Uganda as of now.

Water.org

This organization targets villages in developing countries. Their philosophy is that the community needs to be responsible for being able to build and sustain their water system. They communicate with local partners to determine the type of project and materials needed. Each project involves locally available materials and simple technology. The entire communities work together in the construction of the system and then members of the community are provided with the knowledge and skills to maintain and repair the system when needed. Water.org holds training and seminars on sanitation and hygiene to ensure that the community participates in this initiative as well.

Overall, these initiatives are making a difference as well as progress towards clean water being available to all world citizens. There are many ways to help out. Please visit their websites for more information.

There are only few blogs regarding resources and environment and for a change, I would like to share my thoughts about this water concern. We all need fresh and clean water and I hope many will know what are the things that they should be doing to keep the water free from dirt and pollution.

  2. well done to all who are working to provide these clean water initiatives. But more must be done to prevent water being contaminated in the first place. Why are large companies allowed to pollute and get away with it? Why are farming and agricultural practices still allowed to spray chemicals that soak into the food and into the soils? Nature, the earth has a way of cleansing water itself as it filters through the many layers and also gains in minerals. One day soon nobody wuill be able to tap down into a well to find precious clean clear water because the toxic chemicals will all be in the water. dreadful

    • ..exactly why food production neeeds to be sustainable and without the use of chemicals killing us slowly and killing the land and waterways rather FAST now.
